Bantam House season was exactly 8 minutes and 19 seconds old when Team 2’s Adam Gussin swooped in on Blizzard goalie Michael Band for the first score of the game--and the season. Blizzard ace defenseman Phillipe Hauswald answered with a score a few minutes later, and The Blizzard kept the game even until early in the third period with a tally from Chris Pohl, a second goal from Phillipe and an assist from a hustling Jeremy Jacques. But then Team 2's respected forward, Matt (Big Shoulders) Bodnar took charge against an uncharacteristically disorganized Blizzard defense and scored twice, completing a hat trick. Jeremy Strauss contributed a goal for Team 2 and Artem Litvak and Phil Castiel (in only his second year on blades) were credited with assists. Blizzard Goalie Mike Band made some great saves to keep his team in the game right to the end, and Team 2 goalie Sam Raim, splitting goal-keeping duties with Marc Fisher, staved off a furious but ultimately futile last minute effort by The Blizzard. "This has all the makings of a season-long rivalry," commented one hockey afficionado.

This was not a game for the faint of heart. Both teams skated hard as the 2002-2003 MYHA Bantam House got off to a great start for team 5 (Black) and team 6 (Green). This was an exciting seesaw battle, which ended a 5-5 draw. The fans were on the edge of their seats through numerous lead changes and momentum shifts. Both teams played extremely well, especially for the first game of the season. Team 5 scored first at the 10 minute mark of period 1 on a goal by Brendan O'Conner (assists Kahan,Richardson). Less than a minute later, Danny Karbeling (assists Enders, Farber) got the equalizer for team 6. The score was 1-1 at the end of the first period. Momentum shifted in favor of Team 6 as Danny Karbeling scord his second goal of the game (assists Noller,Lacey) and then Yoni Farber scored (assist Dogum). With less than a minute left in the second period, momentum shifted to team 5, as Tommy Richardson scored his first goal (assist Kahan,O'Conner) to bring the score to 3-2 in favor of team 6 at the end of the second period. Team 5 continue to apply pressure as the third period unfolded. At the 9 minute mark, Tommy Richardson scored his second goal (assist Kahan) to tie the score 3-3 and then at the 5 minute mark Tommy Richardson gave team 6 the lead 4-3 as he scored his third goal (assist Kahan and Tenabe). Team 5 bounced back to tie the game at the 3:17 mark, as Toto Alarcon scored (assist Dogum,Karbeling). The real excitement began with less than 40 seconds left in the game with the score 4-4. At the 37 second mark Brendan O'Conner scored his second goal of the game through a screen for team 5 (assist Kahan). Then with 10 seconds remaining in the game, Team 6 pulled their goalie in favor of a 6th skater just as Danny Karbeling (assist Noller) netted a top shelf goal (his third of the game) through a screen. Neither team scored despite some great play during the 5-minute overtime, and the game ended in a hard-fought 5-5 tie. |

This game was close throughout thanks to solid defense and strong goaltending by both teams. The Gators scored the lone goal in period one when Yoni Farber's shot from the blue line was deflected into the net midway through the period. Danny Karbeling was credited with an assist. Team 4 netted the equalizer as Marc Fisher scored (unassisted). Late in the second period, Toto Alarcon scored on a breakaway (unassisted) to give the Gators a 2-1 lead at the end of 2 periods. The Gators peppered the goal early and often in the third period, but goalie Ginsberg repeatedly held them at bay. Then with less than 6 minutes remaining, Danny Karbeling's breakaway backhand went off the post, but Toto Alarcon alertly trailing the play, chipped in the goal. Team 4 rallied to bring the score to 3-2 at the 2 minute mark as Martyn Viger scored, nicely assisted by Jason Mohr and Brian Lessans. In an attempt to force overtime Team 4 pulled Ginsberg, but the Gator defense was equal to the task. Danny Karbeling scored an empty net goal (assist Farber) to seal the win for the Gators. |
